Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is often defined as a condition which causes movement problems, causing physical disability. A person suffering from Cerebral palsy can often have difficulty with sensation, depth perception and communication. Up to 33% of cases involve difficulty with cognition and epilepsy.

Damage causing CP can develop during pregnancy, during childbirth or before or after birth.

There are three types of Cerebral Palsy:

• Spastic cerebral palsy
Some of the body’s muscles are tight, stiff and weak. This makes control difficult.

• Athetoid cerebral palsy
This is where muscle control is affected by spontaneous movements. Posture is affected.

• Ataxic cerebral palsy
This type of condition causes problems with balance, shaky movements of hands or feet and difficulty with speech.
