Garstang Court of Protection Team

Free legal advice with Vincents Solicitors in Garstang

People concerned about losing mental capacity – and their families – are invited to a free Court of Protection information event with the friendly and professional team at Vincents Solicitors in Garstang.

The event will introduce guests to the Court of Protection (CoP) and Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), which together form the legal framework which safeguards people who have lost capacity due to illness, injury or disability.

These protections ensure their financial, legal, health and welfare matters are managed appropriately if they are unable to care for themselves, or if their carer is no longer able to support them.

Anyone interested in learning more is welcome to attend the event, which will take place at Garstang Arts Centre on Croston Road on Monday 30 March from 9.30am to 12pm.

“Knowing that you or your loved one will be properly cared for later in life is an important consideration for everyone, but especially for those living with illness, injury or disability,” said Nicola Hayes, head of Vincents’ Court of Protection department.

“The Court of Protection ensures that decisions are made in a person’s best interests and are overseen by a legal body to help prevent errors or malpractice.

“Understanding how to put these protections in place – including the responsibilities, costs and timescales involved – can feel daunting to navigate alone.

“We recognise this can be a difficult subject to approach, and we want to help people become better informed. That’s why we are hosting this free event.”

The discussion will cover the role of the Court of Protection, why it is important, and practical considerations such as how to apply, typical costs, how to raise the issue with a family member, and what may happen if arrangements are left too late.

Conditions that may benefit from Court of Protection support include dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, brain injuries and learning disabilities. Ideally, protections should be put in place before they are needed, while a person still has mental capacity or is already being cared for by a loved one.

A friend, family member or legal professional can be appointed as a Lasting Power of Attorney to manage the day-to-day affairs of someone who is subject to Court of Protection oversight.
