Pack your bags and make a Will

Do you include making a Will in your list of things to do before going on holiday?

Pack your suitcase, download the boarding pass, dig out the Euros, check your Will is up to date…

You may be surprised to know it’s actually quite common, as most solicitors will tell you.  We’ve all had people walk in or call the day before a big trip wanting to make or update their Will.  While death isn’t something you particularly want to be thinking about when planning a relaxing break away, there are a lot of reasons why holiday preparations and Wills go hand in hand.  Sorting out the holiday insurance is often a trigger because it makes people think about becoming unwell particularly if it should happen while abroad.  Saying goodbye to loved ones, even just for a short spell, can raise the issue in your mind.  And getting on a plane is another driver for even the most seasoned and confident travellers especially, I find, when parents go away together without their children. That often seems to focus the mind.

While there may not be time to draw up a full Will immediately prior to going away, your solicitor will be more than happy to assist. Depending on when you plan to jet off, they may suggest a couple of different temporary solutions based on the complexity of your financial or family circumstances.  If time is limited, but you are adamant you must have a Will in place before going away, I would suggest a Holding or Temporary Will which is updated upon your return.  It would allow you to outline broad themes such as ensuring who does or doesn’t benefit from your estate, and naming Guardians for your children as a matter of priority.  When you get home you would then review and amend it, tailored to your specific needs.

So if you are getting ready for your big summer holiday or making plans for later in the year, here’s a handy checklist to help make sure you’ve got all the official things sorted before you set off:

1. Check your passport is in date
2. Make sure you know your luggage allowances
3. Carry out a home security check
4. Check your route / time to the airport and pre-book a parking space
5. Take out travel insurance
6. Sort out your travel money
7. Tell your bank before you go abroad
8. Sort out pet care
9. Pre-book your car hire
10. Make an appointment to discuss your Will.

If you’re getting away soon I hope you have a great holiday and I’ll see you on your return!
